چکیده

Liquid crystal (LC) monomers are a novel type of resin for stereolithography that result in polymers having unique physical and mechanical properties. These monomers consist of rigid central cores connected to acrylate functional groups by short aliphatic chains. Because of the rigid-rod structure of the monomer the cross-linked polymer networks formed have high glass transition temperatures (Tg). The high TglS result in particularly high upper-use temperatures for stereolithography parts. This paper reports on photopolymerization reaction rates and monomer conversion for two acrylate monomers measured using reflectance real-time infra-red spectroscopy (RRTIR). The RRTIR method measures the disappearance of reactive acrylate groups in the monomer as a function oftime while the monomers are being exposed to UV light. For the two new resins, UV irradiation using an argon ion laser gives rapid photopolymerization with acrylate conversion as high as 95 %. Conversion and polymerization rates in these monomers are dependent upon photo-initiator selection and concentration. In addition, the results indicate that conversion increases with increased laser intensity and elevated temperatures.

Theory and computation of photopolymerization-induced phase transition and morphology development in blends of crystalline polymer and photoreactive monomer.

A hypothetical phase diagram of a crystalline polymer/photoreactive monomer mixture has been calculated on the basis of phase field (PF) free energy of crystal solidification in conjunction with Flory-Huggins (FH) free energy of liquid-liquid demixing to guide the morphology development during photopolymerization of poly(ethylene oxide)/triacrylate blend. The self-consistent solution of the com...

Differential photo-calorimetry of photopolymerizable ceramic suspensions

Suspensions of alumina powders in low-viscosity acrylate monomers were produced and their curing behaviour characterized. Although these suspensions contain 50 vol % Al2O3 particles, the viscosity is between 200 and 300 mPas. These suspensions were rendered ultraviolet-curable by the addition of photoinitiators sensitive to ultraviolet radiation. Photopolymerization kinetics were characterized ...

Effect of polymer structures on electro-optical properties of polymer stabilized liquid crystal films

The polymer stabilized liquid crystal (PSLC) film is a relatively novel electro-optical material, which is generally obtained by dissolving a small amount of a bifunctional photoreactive monomer in a low molecular mass liquid crystal. In this paper, the PSLC films were prepared with photoreactive biphenyl methacrylate monomers by photopolymerization induced phase separation. The effects of liqu...

Recent Advances in Photo-Induced Free-Radical Polymerization

Free radical photopolymerization dominates most of the industrial applications of photocuring. The most popular are protective coatings, dental fillings, adhesives, inks, lithography (printing plates), stereolithography but also advanced hightechnology purposes (micro and optoelectronics, holographic data storage, etc.) [1]. Currently, radical photopolymerization is also applied to prepare new ...

Second-harmonic light generation in pyroelectric liquid-crystal polymers

Pyroelectric liquid-crystal polymers were prepared by photopolymerization of binary mixtures of two monomers that exhibit a smectic C* phase: A2c, 49-$(R)-(2)-2-[(10-acryloyloxy)decyl]oxy%-3-nitrophenyl 4-{48[(11-acryloyloxy)undecyloxy]phenyl%benzoate and A1b, 49-((R)-(1)-2-octyloxy)-39-nitro phenyl 4-(48-@(11acryloyloxy)undecyloxy]phenyl) benzoate. Both liquid-crystal monomers have a NO2 subst...
